First I will explain what a server is. A server is a computer or a program that provides services to other programs. The server is a physical computer which runs a program that runs these services. More people are connected with the server which knows only one user. A computer connected to a server is a client. A server has more disk space to save files and all the clients can view those files.
A Web server is a computer which is connected to the internet all the time. On the web server is running software, pictures, websites and files, which are shared on the internet with other people. Every computer which is connected to the internet becomes a unique IP address, also the web server has its own IP address. Once you made a registration of a domain name you will get an IP address where the Web server is located. They call this a Domain name.
Normally a website will be placed under a Hosting Provider or ISP (Internet Service Provider), this server is running day and night. It’s also possible to let your own computer run as a server, but it has run 24 hours a day to make your website available on the internet.
There are different types of servers:
- File Servers
- Web servers
- Mail Servers
- Database Servers
- Printer Servers
- FTP servers
- DHCP servers
- Domain Name Servers
What is a Web server doing
A web server is the same as your computer, but they are specially built to use lesser space and it has a fast internet connection. There is a 2 way internet connection, uploading and downloading. Sending emails is uploading and browsing on the internet is downloading. A web server has to do a lot of uploading for the people who are browsing.
A web server needs a special Web server software. This software decides what file he has to open when someone is browsing. There are many maps on the web server but in the root map is always a file called index.html or index.php. When a visitor is entering the homepage of your site, they will always go to this index file. From there is a link to other pages within the website. When you click on that link, the software is sending you to that page.
The Web server is managed by a web host, which makes limits for a user who wants to make his own site.
