How To Use IrfanView Free Photo Editing Software

 

IrfanView logoIrfanView is a photo editing software which is fast and easy to use. With this multifunctional program you can view and edit images very quickly. With IrfanView you can make screenshots and slide shows. Furthermore, you can watch movies and listen music with IrfanView.

It is very useful for combining simple photo editing and display images. With IrfanView you can resize, rotate, apply filters and color correction and more. For many years this program is used for photo editing courses.

A big advantage compared with other photo editing software it that IrfanView uses only a little memory and is very fast. Moreover, with all the extra plugins it can read many different formats like GIF, BMP, JPG, PNG and Tiff, and it also can read files made by Photoshop and Gimp. If you download and install one of the plugins you can play video and audio files, this makes IrfanView also a media player. Another plugin is IrfanPaint, with this plugin you can draw but this plugin provides only some basic functions. It is also possible to burn slideshow to data or Video CD/DVD, using Nero Burning ROM software. There are many plugins available.

Download and install IrfanView

The software is available at irfanview.com, you can download it on different platforms. For installing other languages go to the link IrfanView Languages and select the language you wish you install. There are 2 options, the installer(exe) or ZIP file. After you installed the program, you can unzip the language pack to the InfanView\Languages folder. Standard you can find this in your Windows Program files folder. To change the language, start IrfanView and go to Properties->Language. You can start IrfanView on different ways: in the Windows Explorer go to a picture and right-click with your mouse on it and select Open with and choose IrfanView or in the start menu search for IrfanView. The easiest way is of course by double-click on the icon in the desktop

How to use IrfanView

There are many things to do in Irfanview, I only tell some of them. To open a file go in the upper navigation bar to File–> open. To save the image Select Save As. You can easy convert images in other format like GIF, BMP, JPG, PNG, Tiff and much more.

Paint on Image

If you want to paint on an image you can do that by pressing the F12 button. A menu will show up on the right side of the screen. Here you have some tools like text inserting, color selecting, erasing and replacing.

It also easy to make a screenshot and edit it in IrfanView. Every computer or laptop has a print screen button on the keyboard, use this to print a screen. In IrfanView you can paste in using the CTRL-V buttons of your keyboard or click Edit–>paste in the navigation bar.

Every image you can crop, in the navigation bar go to Edit–>Crop Selection. With this option you can crop and cut the image.

Resize Image

Many images have a big format, too big to sent to a friend by email or post it in social media like Facebook, LinkedIn or Pinterest. To resize the image you just  click on Image–>Resize/Resample in the navigation bar, in a new window you can change the picture manually by pixels, cm or inches. It has also some standard dimensions, for sending through email better set it to 640 x 480 pixels. Click on OK to back to your  image.

Resize Multiple Images with IrfanView

If you want to sent many pictures to email or uploading to a social network, it is better to resize them otherwise it will take a lot of time to sent/upload them. You can resize multiple images at the same time, first you have to make a new folder for your resized images. Once you made a new folder go in IrfanView to File–>Batch conversion/rename, a new window will open. Select the pictures you want to convert, choose the output format. Select Advanced and choose the format. For multiple pictures which you want to sent by email or uploading to social networks at once, choose 320 x 200, the image is still clear and has a much smaller format. After this, select the output directory and click Start batch.

How to make panorama image

Go to Image–>Create Panorama Image in the navigation bar. You can choose between horizontal and vertical, select Add images to find images for your panorama. The added images you can remove, sort and move up and down. To give the panorama image a name tick Insert file name into image. To make the image click Create Image and it will show up in IrfanView.

Make slide shows of multiple photos

To make a slide show you can do that by pressing the Slide show icon, it’s the second icon below the navigation bar. A new window will open which look maybe complicated, but that’s not. Browse in your folder for images you want to add and click the Add button. you can add from different folders as many as you want. With the move up button you can sort the list of images. For the rest you can set the time between every image or change image by keyboard or mouse click. Add MP3 files to have a background music and after you can burn it on CD/DVD using the Nero.
