Downloading movies legal or illegal?

Many people are just wondering if downloading a movie legal is or illegal. There are so many ways to download  a movie or watch online a stream movie for free. Uploading, sharing or streaming a movie is illegal, the reason is the copyrights. But now im surfing on the web I can see many streaming sites and download sites, like BitTorrent, and I can have it all for free on my computer.  Am I doing something illegal when I download a movie and other people sharing it? It’s not my fault that I surf on the net and enter a site to download a movie. So im just wondering legal or illegal.

It is produced, marketed and many people are involved in this process, it has a copyright and if you don’t pay for that movie  then you have it illegal. But still millions of people are downloading, so why is it a crime? Under the copyright office it says “matter, copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner. ” So that means if you download a file without permission of the copyright owner,  you are violating the copyright.

Downloading a movie usually will be done by a BitTorrent or file sharing software, when you think you are only downloading the file you’re also sharing the file by peer-to-peer (P2P) to others. P2P software like BitTorrent using is all legal, using BitTorrent or any other technology to download copyrighted material that you don’t have the right to is not. The fact is that still many people still downloading and sharing movies with copyright and it’s still increasing. Plenty of sites sharing files with copyright, still they are not catched by the law.

The consequences of illegal downloading and distribute of copyright materials is punishable by law.  The fees are:

  • Criminal penalties for first-time offenders can be as high as five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
  • Civil penalties can run into many thousands of dollars in damages and legal fees. The minimum penalty is $750 per song

In July 2009, someone was ordered to pay $675,000 to the RIAA for the illegal sharing of 30 songs. Be aware if you are downloading by a torrent, there is a high risk of receiving viruses, also think before you download the next popular song or movie, stop and ask yourself if it’s worth the risk.
